Processing Books

Each time you come to work you should remove book jackets from new books and write the fund (as written on the order card) on the inside center of the book jacket. If fund is her, bar, ref, res or gift just leave those book covers black. Put book jackets in the filing cabinet.

  • Apply spine labels, starting from the beginning.
    1. Pull one book from truck. Any book jackets should be processed as above.
    2. Compare spine label to order card.
  • They must match. If not, refer to your supervisor.
  • Place order card in file box.
  • Apply spine label to the spine of book using heat plate or iron.
    1. Using guide to place label on spine. On reference books do not cover up such information as contents information on encyclopedias. Ask supervisor for proper placement.
    2. Labels may need trimming if spine is too wide.
    3. Especially narrow books will require placement of spine label on front cover, upper left corner.
    4. Return labeled book to the truck and continue with the next book until the truck is completed. Be careful to keep the books and order cards in the same order.
  • Stamp and treat.
    1. As above, work on one book at a time, starting from the beginning.
    2. Stamp edges and title page of book.
      1. Regular books: All 3 sides of the book edges and title page
      2. Heritage books: All 3 sides of the book edges and title page
    3. Heritage books get a “Heritage” stamp, all others get regular stamp. Some books will already have a LSU Library stamp on the title page. If so, use small date stamp only.
    4. Treat books, inserting the strip up the spine where possible.
    5. Return book to truck and continue with next book.
    6. Place completed book truck by table to be checked.
