Checking book request order cards in the card catalog & in process

The following are the procedures for checking book request order cards.

Alphabetize order cards.

  1. Author entry −
  2. a. Personal name:
    i. Smith, John D.
    b. Corporate name: (personal names precede corporate names.)
    i. Smith &Sons, Co.
  3. Title entry −
Look under main entry −


    Card Catalog
  1. If you find a catalog card that seems to match the order card, carefully compare all information, including names, titles, edition, place of publication, publisher, dates, and number of pages.
  2. If you find a corresponding card and the request is for a work having an “open entry” or is one of a multi-volume set, write ADD in the LCCN space on the card and write the call number in the space provided on the back of the card.
  3. If a corresponding card is found, write the call number in the space provided on the front of the card. Then, check the stacks, circulation, location file, and the books waiting to be shelved to verify that the book actually is available. If it is, write HAVE at the top of the card. Then file in the “Return to Department” drawer.
  4. If a corresponding card is not found, write a small zero in the lower left portion of the LSC box and your initials.
    In Process
  1. If you find a corresponding slip, write ON ORDER at the top of the card and file in the “Return to Department” drawer.
  2. If a corresponding slip is no found, write a small zero in the upper left portion of the LSC box and your initials.
