Kater Bind
- There needs to be a minimum of 10 books on the Kater Bind shelf in order to begin a new lot for pickup. DO NOT COMBINE/MIX Kater-Crafts, Library, or Heritage books. There are two binding categories, but each one is separated into two more. They are all separate lots.
- Bring out the La Sierra University Library stamp, black ink pad, the rubber band box, order card box, slip of paper, pencil, packing tape dispenser, box(es) and a black permanent marker.
- Ask your supervisor what is the F lot number. Write the lot number, the date of pick up and Kater Binds on the slip of paper.
- Tape up one of the boxes from Kater-Crafts. We reuse boxes from them, and the boxes can be found by the filing cabinets next to the window. Place a strip of tape across length-wise on the opening. Place a strip on each end. Turn the box right-side up and place a sheet of newsprint on the bottom.
- Get one book from the pile.
- Remove the order card, and if any, the pink gift processing slip, from the book. Look at both the order card and pink slip to see what stamp is needed. The book will receive a regular property if the card and pink slip mentions (or not) main on them. If the card and pink slip has “HER” written or typed on them, then it needs to be stamped with a Heritage Room property stamp.
- Stamp the book on the title page. The stamp needs to be placed in an open area in the center. Do not stamp near the margins. The bindery trims this type of binding, and we want to prevent the stamp from missing any parts of it. If there is a situation that arises, please see your supervisor for assistance.
- If there is a pink slip with the book, it needs to be folded into thirds. The order card (print showing) will be placed on top of the pink slip. Wrap a rubber band around both items. Place the order card in the order card box. Each card placed into this box will be kept in alphabetical order by title.
- Place the book into the Kater-Craft box. The bigger and heavier books will be placed at the bottom, and the smaller ones on top. The spines should be alternating in the box. The books are to be only packed flat, never on end.
- Repeat steps 5-9.
- When there are no more books on the Kater Bind shelf, and you have been told to close the lot, then the box(es) will be taped shut. Stuff the box gently with crushed newsprint. The box needs to be pack tight so the items will not shift during pickup and drop off.
- Tape the box just the like the bottom had been taped up.
- There is a shipping label on the box. Use a black permanent marker to cross out the job number printed on the label. Then write the F lot number above or below that (i.e. F1304). The F stands for our route. The first two digits are the current year. The last two digits are the consecutive lot.
- To make sure the lot stays together at pickup, write how many boxes are with this lot (i.e. Box 1 of 2). The same should be done even if there is only one box.
- Place the box(es) below the binding shelves.
- Copy all the order cards in groups of five. Keep all the order cards in alphabetical order. Paper clip the pages and put them on top of the corresponding lot.
- Let your supervisor know you have packed the Kater Binds. The supervisor will close the lot(s), and staple the copied order cards to a blue Kater-Crafts form. These two items will be taped onto of the box(es).
